The TeraMed Initiative is pleased to announce that Mr. Ovais Sarmad, former Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will join its High-Level Advisory Committee.

TeraMed’s High-Level Advisory Committee plays a vital role in fostering relationships with governments, financial institutions, and the private sector to mobilize political and financial support. As part of their strategic guidance, they are helping to shape the TeraMed Declaration, an upcoming commitment to be endorsed by Mediterranean governments at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, that will mark a unified push for clean energy transformation in the region.

With over three decades of experience in multilateral organizations including in addressing climate change and its governance, Mr. Sarmad brings valuable expertise and credibility to the initiative. During his tenure at the United Nations Climate Change (UNFCCC), he played a critical role in supporting negotiations under the Paris Agreement and amplifying the concerns of climate-vulnerable regions around the world. His new role with TeraMed will focus on strengthening the initiative’s visibility, building high-level partnerships, and supporting advocacy efforts ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

“The TeraMed Initiative represents a necessary step toward regional energy transformation,” said Mr. Sarmad. “I am honoured to support its mission and contribute to the dialogue and action needed to build a climate-resilient Mediterranean, and help bridging policy ambition and local action while engaging civil society, governments, and financial institutions in a shared commitment to clean energy.”

Members of the committee brings together influential figures from the Mediterranean and international energy landscape. These members include current and former policymakers, diplomats, renewable energy experts, and senior representatives from civil society and academia. Their collective mission is to elevate TeraMed’s profile in key international and regional fora, including the UNFCCC, G20, European Union, and the League of Arab States.

Dr. Jauad El Kharraz, Coordinator of the TeraMed Initiative, welcomed Mr. Sarmad’s appointment, noting: “Mr. Sarmad’s involvement reflects the calibre of leadership we are assembling to drive this initiative forward. His global standing, diplomatic experience, and unwavering commitment to climate justice will be invaluable to our collective effort.”

TeraMed is a Mediterranean-led initiative grounded in regional cooperation and supported by civil society organizations, think tanks, and clean energy experts. It promotes an inclusive, bottom-up approach to achieving energy security, affordability, and resilience in the face of escalating climate and geopolitical challenges. Through strategic partnerships, policy advocacy, and cross-border collaboration, TeraMed aims to unify the region around a shared clean energy future.
